Pilates was created in the 1920s by a trainer called Joseph Pilates. His initial trainees were soldiers returning from war and dancers. There was a strong focus on rehabilitation. Over the years, Pilates has developed and now includes both the classical exercises created by Joseph Pilates himself, and other exercises which evolved from these roots.
The benefits of Pilates include: endurance; flexibility; balance and co-ordination; reduced stress; improved posture; stronger core; increased spinal fitness; and injury rehabilitation.
Barre classes are a blend of ballet, strength and flexibility training. It is fairly cardio-vascular and your heart rate will increase but there is no jumping (unless you choose to) nor impact on joints. Set to music, using a ballet barre, window ledge or chair, you will also need your mat for abdominal exercises. Light hand weights may be introduced as you progress. A fun and challenging workout!
